Trevor Bayne

Trevor Bayne made story early today by becoming the youngest mortal to ever intend the Daytona 500. The 20-year-old held soured some of NASCAR’s biggest obloquy during the final laps to intend the sport’s most desirable race. I was rooting for Bayne every salutation long. Believe it or not, I had predicted him to win. (I hit grounds via character Fantasy Sports, mind you!) But it was more for personal reasons than anything else. You see, Bayne is from my hometown. And as I watched a hometown hero intend his sport’s greatest oppose â€" digit who is meet barely out of broad school â€" I institute myself wondering digit simple thing:

If my kids showed an welfare in racing, would I encourage that interest?

After all, it is a chanceful sport. It was nearly decade eld past to the period when NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt lost his chronicle in the 2001 Daytona 500. But I’m a concern believer that digit can’t springy chronicle patch existence afeard of death. Besides, the sport has become a daylong way. Earnhardt was the terminal mortal (knock on wood) to die on the road thanks to reinforced safety measures much as crack break barriers and the HANS figure which supports a driver’s nous and neck during a crach.

So would I permit my kids race?

The actuality of the concern is this: I belike don’t requirement to worry most it. After all, most NASCAR drivers were unclothed to cars at a very young age. And I’m not rattling the kinda man who sits around and talks carburetors and spark plugs every weekend long. Given that, it’s implausible some of my kids will ever jones to intend behind the wheel. Competitively, at least.

But, on the other hand, I love NASCAR and check it every the time. Plus, there are dirt tracks meet downbound I75 from us. And our wonderful city is today the chesty bag of a Daytona 500 winner, so you never know… my kids could see the requirement for speed. And if they do, the logical place to start would be with go-cart racing and go from there.

And you undergo what? I conceive I would permit them explore racing to some extent they desired to. I conceive anything plaything or sport that a child is passionate most is a beatific thing. Granted, given its chanceful nature, I wouldn’t assistance garner racing for my kids. But football’s dangerous, and I wouldn’t conceive twice if my kids desired to endeavor it.

So, even though I conceive it’s unlikely, if the period ever were to become when digit (or more) of my kids were to communicate to intend participating in racing, I would, indeed, help them do meet that.

You never know. Maybe digit of them’ll intend the Daytona 500 digit of these years.

Congratulations, Trevor Bayne! Knoxville’s chesty of you, my friend.
