Irina Werning's Back To The Future Photo Project

Is there a picture of your female that seems to delimitate who he is? Do you advert hunting at photos of yourself as a kid, and thinking THIS IS ME? I definitely do. For me, it’s a represent of my miss and me, stagnant in the backwards yard. She’s a toddler, I’m a sulky hunting four-or fivesome assemblage old, move coyly, but hunting world-wearily at the camera. The picture is faded, the clothes are dated, but it ease feels as such same me as whatever ikon I’ve seen since.

Our trance with retrospective photography has been fed by apps same Hipstamatic, which lets us infuse our disentangle digital images with ye olde distorted veneer.  Artist Irina Werning has ever been into older photos, and wanted them out with a self-acknowledged nosiness. So  she definite to create whatever of those iconic old-school moments…using the subjects of photos as adults, clad as children.

The termination is riveting and more than a little eerie.

Werning’s impact plays with that urge to attain something newborn into an instant heirloom, but it also plays with a aggregation of deeper ideas, same our want to wager into our kids’ futures, our kids’ obsession with sight their parents as children, and our possess urge to go backwards to childhood.

The images are funny, yes, but they don’t hit you over the nous with humorâ€"or at small there’s sufficiency sorrowfulness and compassionateness and depth to equilibrise it out. I could wager how this send could appeal to whatever of the grouping who same the Awkward Family Photos series, but different those, Irina Werning’s impact is not a digit liner. It helps us wager the adults exclusive our children, and the children exclusive ourselves.

See the whole Back To The Future program here.  It’s an current project, so more photos may be posted as time goes on.
